Our Program
Keiki planting peanuts
We offer inquiry-based programs for school and community groups.
Our programs fall into three classes:
One-time visits to Puanui (most often by community groups or distant schools)
Repeated visits to Puanui (most often by local schools)
Work at schools in North Kohala
All of these programs seek to encourage participants to "wonder about how...." and come up with solutions, "let's try...." and be able to articulate "why" they think something will work, and (in the case of repeat visitors or school-site experiments) articulate "why" it did or didn't work, and defend that understanding with measurements. Our intent for the inquiry-based framework is to have participants engage in a level of creativity while practicing cultural values (observation, having a relationship to the land & others, respect, kuleana, etc). By having participants engage in inquiry-based practices they will be innovative and problem-solving focused - something we are going to need in the future.

What to Expect
We encourage all ages to visit Puanui. School groups, university classes, community groups, and families are welcomed. If you would like to schedule a visit to see the learning possibilities before bringing your group, we can accommodate that effort. There is no fee to visit Puanui. Four wheel drive is recommended, but not necessary. And the elements will dictate the day's activities. Visiting groups will experience the following:
